Light cannabis: Is It Legal To Buy It?

Light Cannabis (or low-THC hemp) has been growing in popularity for months. More and more grow shops, specialty stores, and online retailers now sell it—and plenty of people are buying.

There are countless varieties of hemp inflorescences: Eletta Campana hemp, Futura, Cannabis Sativa —countless names and terpenes. Yet, one question remains:

“Is it actually legal to buy?”

A tricky question… a fair one though and one that many people are asking —there’s still a lot of confusion. So, let’s try to answer it.

Let’s start with hemp cultivation. In Italy, hemp cultivation has always been legal, but it comes with strict regulations. Private individuals cannot grow it, and farmers must comply with rigid guidelines. For instance, not all hemp varieties can be grown, and for hemp to be legal, the grower must conduct tests and obtain certifications proving that the THC content in the inflorescences is below 0.6%.

Purchasing certified Italian-grown hemp that meets legal standards is not against the law. However, its intended use is strictly regulated under Law 242 of 2016. That is why legal hemp packages often state that the product is intended for technical and collectible use, that it is not to be smoked or inhaled, and similar disclaimers.

Italian law, for example, prohibits the recreational use of low-THC cannabis. Therefore, smoking light cannabis is not legal. Essentially, while it is legal to buy it, one must be cautious about how it is used.

If a law enforcement officer were to find someone smoking cannabis (even legal), they could issue an administrative fine. For this reason, it’s advisable not to open hemp packages in public to avoid any misunderstandings.
