The colors of cannabis: what do they really depend on?
When we look at a light cannabis flower, its color can tell us a lot. Behind every shade lies a mix of genetic and environmental factors that directly affect the appearance — but also, indirectly, the perception of quality.
The pigments responsible of the colors of cannabis: chlorophyll, anthocyanins, and carotenoids
Chlorophyll – The dominant green
This is the most well-known plant pigment, responsible for the typical green color of the flowers.
It develops when the plant receives plenty of light during the vegetative phase: if you see a flower that is bright green, compact, and vibrant, it probably grew under excellent conditions.
Anthocyanins – The purple, blue, and red tones
Think of black grapes or blueberries. The same water-soluble pigments, called anthocyanins, give color to various cannabis varieties. These pigments mainly develop during the final stages of flowering, when temperatures drop, and their color also depends on the cellular pH:
Acidic → red
Neutral → purple
Alkaline → blue
Genetically predisposed varieties (like some purple phenotypes) can develop these hues even in indoor cultivation, if managed with targeted temperature fluctuations.
Carotenoids – Orange and golden tones
These pigments, more stable than chlorophyll, appear as yellow-orange shades especially noticeable in mature pistils. They are naturally present in plant cells and become more visible as chlorophyll degrades, for example in the late flowering stages or during drying.
But is the color of cannabis an indicator of quality?
Short answer: not by itself, but it can tell you quite a bit.
A flower with vivid, well-contrasted colors is almost always the result of good cultivation. However, a visual check alone isn’t enough: smell, touch, and some experience are also needed.
Here are some useful visual clues:
Vivid colors = careful drying and curing processes
Dull or grayish tones = possible stress, mold, or poor processing
Contrast between pistils and calyxes = sign of good maturation
At Weedom
For us, the color of cannabis is just one of many indicators we consider in selection. It’s not a beauty contest, but a sign that, together with other factors, tells the story of that flower.
Each Weedom variety has its own unique visual profile:
- the bright green of Bearry
- the deep, mysterious purple of Hyppurple
- the golden, sugary tones of Toucandy
For us, choosing a variety is a bit like choosing a work of art: it includes everything — color, structure, aroma, and soul.
